Project Details

Scope: Wellhead and Flowline Cut and Cap Trial

Location: Roma, Queensland Australia

Budget: $60,000

Summit was commissioned for a wellhead and flowline cut and cap campaign which was completed in March 2020. Scope of work was the cut and cap of 4 conventional wellheads and 10 flowline risers.

Summit deployed a 3 person crew and completed this work by means of internal cutting devices. This was advantageous as it allowed the client to complete the works without needing to dig a bell-hole around wellheads and flowline risers to reach cut depth.

Additionally, Summit utilized novel hydraulic hoisting equipment to remove the wellheads from the ground, which meant the client did not require a crane onsite, nor have personnel working near a suspended load completing final casing cuts.

Unique Challenges and Success

  • During the trial SDS experienced several wet weather holdups during the campaign, however the crew were able to perform wellhead cut and caps in approximately 4 hours. The cut and cap included a pre-start wellhead pressure check and bubble test and at the tail end of the job, installation of 10m surface cement plug and abandonment signage. Removal of flowline risers took approximately 1 hour per riser.

  • All  JHA, safe working method statements and pressure test certificates were completed and reviewed with the client. All crew were appropriately inducted and able to provide relevant qualification tickets to permit authorities.

  • Despite Summit's extensive experience in Canada, this small work campaign was the first campaign of work completed by Summit in Australia. Due to this the client was expecting significant teething issues, especially with new equipment and some new crew members. This did not eventuate.

  • Feedback from the client- “this was by far the safest and most time and cost effective method of cutting and capping wellheads that I have seen completed. I will be utilizing Summit's services for both wellhead and flowline riser cut and cap works going forward.”
